Loyal, gentle, jolly, and calm:  these are indeed traits we see in the Newfoundland.  But in the true Newfoundland, there is even more to love as a family dog.  Some call it a sixth sense; some call it an instinctual knowing.  And our dogs definitely have it.

With six girls under 10 years old and senior-citizen-grandparents living on-site, our dogs have to know who they can play with and who they need to give space to.  We haven’t been disappointed.  In fact, to the contrary, we’ve been thrilled.  The grandparents even remark that the dogs have always seemed to instinctively know to stay away from them and let them go where they need to go without fear of being knocked down.  Our dogs may get excited when they see Adam, but they visibly calm down when they’re around the older and younger generations.  And when the girls are outside playing, we look for the dogs if we want to know where the girls are; the dogs and the girls are always together.

We want our dogs to be the best that they can be as family dogs, so we don’t kennel them.  They’re allowed in the house with us, and we have underground dog fence that works very well.  They get very attached to their people so aren’t a good choice for a family that is away a lot during the day or takes vacations that the dogs can’t be part of.  Our puppies will come pre-spoiled and loved by our girls.

When we decided to pursue Adam’s lifelong dream of owning a Newfoundland, we began by researching breeders.  It was important to us to own a dog that came from reputable lines.  It took us three years to settle on a breeder that could provide us with breeding stock that had the good breed type we were looking for. In our choice of breeding stock, we’ve been guided by what has brought us success in horse-breeding: we’ve focused as much or more on the female lines as on the male lines.
